In the UK, 855 titles from Wiley’s book portfolio have recently been added to the Copyright Licensing Agency’s Education Platform, a system that allows school librarians and instructors to more easily access content from books in their library holdings to print and distribute to students within copyright limits. We join 50 other publishers and over 38,000 titles in this initiative from the CLA.

Education Platform provides technology that simplifies the process of reusing small amounts of content in a classroom setting. Instead of finding a book in the library and painstakingly copying pages out on a copy machine, school librarians or instructors can simply sign into their Education Platform account, scan the barcode on the school’s purchased copy of a book, and immediately pull up a high-quality, printable version to excerpt for classroom use. Instructors may use a limited amount of material – 5% or less of the work – to copy and distribute to students in their class.

“Since we launched the Education Platform in September 2019, we’re delighted to have been able to offer a huge range of titles to schools by adding over 39,000 books and magazines from over 55 leading publishers,” said Eela Devani, Chief Product and Data Officer at CLA. “The aim of the Platform has always been to provide maximum support for teaching staff by giving them the flexibility to plan, prepare and share high-quality lesson materials from home or anywhere with access to the internet. At the same time, the copying data that CLA collects from the Platform helps to inform the revenue that publishers and authors receive, which means that the Platform is also directly supporting content creators. Publishers also benefit from data on which books and pages have been used by teachers as well as sales and marketing leads.”

“Ensuring easy and copyright-compliant reuse of our content helps us drive impact and support educational outcomes,” said Rebecca Cook, Wiley’s Associate Director of Copyright & Permissions. “We are pleased to be able to support educators in the UK by integrating a selection of our published titles into Education Platform.”

This solution helps instructors save time and more easily integrate high-quality content from reputable sources in their curriculum. Education Platform also provides features that help librarians and instructors ensure they are within their limits per copyright agreements. For publishers, Education Platform provides transparency about the content that supports educational outcomes among primary and secondary school students.

The CLA license for primary and secondary schools in the UK is funded by the Department of Education, and helps ensure that educational institutions are able to use the content they need to support educational outcomes in a way that is copyright compliant and protects the interests of copyright holders, like authors and other content creators.

The Copyright Licensing Agency is one of the reproduction rights organizations (RROs) that Wiley works with to ensure users have access to reuse content fairly, and ensure that creators are paid for their efforts. Other RROs we work with include Copyright Clearance Center (US) and the Copyright Agency (Australia), as well as many national organizations around the world.
