We’re excited to announce a new partnership with the Wikipedia Library, a project of the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which will connect Wikipedia editors with full-text access to Wiley Online Library content to drive better citations and more accurate content on Wikipedia, one of the Internet’s most-visited websites.

With millions of citation clicks per month, Wikipedia is the starting point of research for many students and professionals. Working with the Wikipedia community ensures that this hub of information is accurate, up-to-date, and connected to the latest scholarly research.

This agreement builds on the success that we have seen in the longstanding relationship between Wikipedia and Cochrane Library. Learn more about the Cochrane-Wikipedia partnership here.

How it works

By partnering with the Wikipedia Library, we allow top Wikipedia editors – qualified on a basis of frequency, volume, and quality of updates to Wikipedia – free access to Wiley Online Library. Editors will use their access to cite and link directly to Wiley resources across Wikipedia articles.

“The trustworthiness and reliability of Wikipedia is built on a foundation of high-quality research,” said Sam Walton, Product Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation. “We are excited to work with the Wiley Online Library to provide Wikipedia’s community of volunteer editors around the world access to Wiley’s 1,600+ journals, 22,000 online books, and hundreds of reference works.”

What’s next

As Wikipedia editors begin to use their access to Wiley Online Library, we expect to see an increase in direct Wiley citations on the platform, which leads to better discovery for Wiley content. For authors and our society partners, this means better visibility for content and new audiences who might not search for scholarly work through traditional scholarly discovery tools.

For users, this means better quality citations and improved article content on Wikipedia, ensuring a more complete jumping-off point for research on topics that interest them.

Why Wikipedia?

Connecting directly with users who begin their research journey outside of the traditional scholarly ecosystem – publisher sites, indexing services, library discovery tools, and so on – is one way we can work to combat misinformation and reinforce the value of scholarship.

As one of the most-trafficked websites in the world, Wikipedia is ideally placed to help us reach users from all walks of life and at all levels of their research journey: whether it’s a student developing their research skills, a non-expert interested in learning something new, or a professional exploring a new topic outside their domain of expertise.

Our relationship allows us to bring our content to users, meeting them where they are and empowering them to achieve their learning goals.
