For millions of students, completing college remains the ultimate dream: the dream of reimagining what’s possible and reaching a better tomorrow.
Yet those who could benefit most from college are also often the most vulnerable to roadblocks, especially in the wake of a global pandemic. A family member gets sick and requires care. A parent receives a pay cut. A student loses her campus-based job. The money required to address such emergencies can mean the difference between staying in school and dropping out.
Wiley Stay the Course Grants sought to support students experiencing economic hardship so that they might persist in their college careers. As frontline witnesses to student challenges, Wiley empowered instructors and academic advisors to nominate students in need for these awards. Through a $100,000 contribution, Wiley provided $500 each to 200 students randomly selected from the pool of nominations. Selected recipients were notified early April.
We'd like to introduce you to four grantees: Skyler Toy, a recent accounting graduate of Morehead State University; German Lemus Guzman, a nursing student at Carson-Newman University; Erin Taxon, who is attending graduate school at the University of South Carolina; and Enya Smilovic, an English major at Stern College for Women, Yeshiva University.
Each of these student's stories are unique and represent the spirit of staying the course in the most inspirational of ways. We hope you enjoy hearing them.
Congratulations to all the Wiley Stay the Course Grant Winners!
