Overview
Wiley Editing Services is offering new Video Creation services that enable authors to effectively deliver their research to a broader audience using Video Abstracts and Video Shorts. These short, professionally produced videos are easy for authors and journals to share.

Authors are responding enthusiastically to this new medium. Andreas Vasdekis, whose article appears in Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics, shared this appreciation: “All co-authors and myself are pleased with the outcome, the video is very representative and educative. […] The science is well conveyed, and the quality is high enough for a broad audience”.

In a recent discussion with Richard Donnelly, Editor of Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, Richard spoke of a strong message shared at a recent board meeting: that their audience (especially younger researchers) want information, including multimedia, that they can quickly and easily digest on their mobile phones.

Video Abstracts have a measurable impact in increasing readership. According to a recent analysis that compared key article usage metrics of articles with a video against the average metric values of articles that published in the same issue. Articles with a video averaged 447% higher Altmetric Attention scores and 111% higher full text views on Wiley Online Library.

While it can be sensitive to upsell authors on supplementary services, videos have proven impact in helping authors disseminate their work more widely. Encouraging your authors to utilize this new channel for research dissemination helps both authors and journals realize multiple benefits.

Some journals, such as Richard’s, include information about video abstracts in standard letters of manuscript acceptance. Some research sponsors, such as pharmaceutical companies, opt to underwrite the costs on the author’s behalf—for example, to communicate clinical trial results. Video abstract information is also in Author Guidelines and on the Author Services Dashboard. In response to authors’ concerns about affordability, Video Shorts (which are shorter and best suited to social media) are offered as a lower-cost option.

How it Works
Authors who use the Video Creation service from Wiley Editing Services, provide their published or accepted article and any existing supporting materials they may have already created to their video production team. A scientific expert from their field summarizes their research into a draft script. Once the author approves the draft script, the production team creates their video. Once the video is finalized, the author can download the final file and share their video with anyone, anywhere. Once the article publishes (or when the video is completed, whichever comes second), the video is placed alongside the article on Wiley Online Library.
