No one wants to be stuck in a dead-end job, but it can be hard to know when it’s the appropriate time to ask for a promotion. Many factors go into determining when it's the right time, but you can increase your chances of success by following these guidelines.
1. It’s been at least a year since your last promotion.
You don’t want to ask for a promotion too soon after getting a job or after your last promotion. Wait at least a year before asking, and be aware that it may take longer at your particular job. Watch those around you. How long did it take for your colleagues to rise through the ranks? Model your promotion schedule on theirs.
2. You’ve exceeded all your objectives.
If you can present a solid case to your boss that you are not only doing your job, but doing it well, then you’ve got a case for a promotion. Be sure to come armed with quantifiable examples of your contributions to the organization.
3. Your company is doing well financially.
You’re more likely to get a raise when the company is doing well. It may be unwise to broach the promotion conversation when the company facing some financial or other hurdles.
4. You’ve learned a new skill.
Constantly keeping your skills up to date is great for staying in your current role, but to move up, you need to seek out new certifications and courses to prove that you’re willing to put in the time and energy to be the best in your field.
5. You pitch in to help others.
Being a team player will help others see you as a leader. Also, taking on new tasks teaches you new skills—skills you might need when you get that promotion.
Follow this advice and you’ll be one step closer to a promotion before you know it! What has helped you move to the next level? Let us know in the comments below.
