About the Author

Kathleen Ireland was born and raised on the East Coast of the United States and obtained her B.S. from the University of Alabama while gaining experience working both for a major pharmaceutical company in their basic research labs and for a Marine Sciences Foundation in Florida. She continued her education at the University of Alabama, earning an M.S. in Marine Sciences in 1981, studying aquatic ecology, and working for the Geological Survey of Alabama in strip mine reclamation. After a few years working for an agricultural genetics corporation and giving birth to two sons, Kathleen returned to school, earning a Ph.D. from Iowa State University while teaching their Human Biology course. She joined the faculty at ISU until moving to Maui for a position teaching human biology for the University of Hawaii, Maui Community College. Kathleen is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key, Alpha Gamma Delta, NSTA, HAPS, and AACE, where she serves on their editorial board. She regularly participates in AP exam readings and has been published as a media editor and contributing author on both anatomy and anatomy and physiology premedical textbooks. She has received a 2008 Toyota Motor Corporation Institute of International Education Galápagos excursion, a 2009/2010 Toyota Tapestry large grant, and a multi-year HAIS/ HCF grant to enhance the schoolwide teaching of 21st century skills.

New to Edition
  • CHAPTER 0—A brand new Chapter 0  has been added to this edition which teaches students how to effectively read the visuals.
  • KEY PROCESSES—To help students organize their learning, a new Key Process feature has been added to this edition. The five processes that are key to most of the physiology presented in this book are: osmosis and diffusion, energy storage and transfer, DNA, protein structure and function, and cellular structure and function. These simple processes are listed and described first in chapter one, and then reappear in more detail in Chapters 2, 3 and 4.
  •  CRITICAL THINKING—More Think Critically questions have been added to key photos, figures, and boxes in the text. Two new categories of Think Critically questions have also been added: Think Critically: Evolution and Think Critically: Scientific Method. These categories help students further understand how evolution and the scientific method are critical to the understanding of Human Biology.
  •  CHAPTER OPENERS—Half of the chapter opening photos, and a third of the opening vignettes have been updated, engaging students from the very beginning of the chapter.
  •  BOXED FEATURES—Many of the Health, Wellness and Disease, Ethics and Issues, What a Scientist Sees, and I Wonder… boxes have been updated to reflect current topics that relate to students’ lives.
  •  I WONDER…—Many of the I Wonder… boxes have been updated, six new I Wonder… videos have been added to the WileyPLUS course, and the new I Wonder… blog is available at  www.wileyiwonder.com. The I Wonder… boxes, videos, and blog engage students by asking real student questions and explaining why Human Biology should matter in their own lives.

  • I Wonder… - I Wonder boxes are essays that explore common questions raised by real students, I Wonder videos in WileyPLUS which explore more questions from real students, and the I Wonder Blog allows students to submit their own questions. The blog also allows professors to present ‘hot topics’ from today’s news in class.
  • Critical Thinking- A variety of critical thinking questions are provided throughout including Think Critically, Critical and Creative Thinking, Clinical Click, and What is happening in this picture? Clinical Click gives students a chance to engage in more health and wellness-related issues,
  • WileyPLUS- integrates a wide variety of practice opportunities, an ebook and rich media including videos, animations and interactivities for students so they can master the material in human biology and feel confident that they are learning the right material.  WileyPLUS includes pre-created assignments and a large bank of questions for instructors so they can easily test students on the material they should be learning.
