Basic to any discussion of the lives and behavior—the biology in the broadest sense of the term—of the animal and plant life of any region, continental, insular, or oceanic, is the authoritative identification of each of their kinds and the determination of their distribution, horizontal as well as vertical.

With this thought in mind, Dr. Patricia Kott (Mrs. Wharton B. Mather), Research Fellow, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, undertook this monographic account of the antarctic Ascidiacea at the request of the Smithsonian Institution.
