This book is a collection of papers from The American Ceramic Society's 35th International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, held in Daytona Beach, Florida, January 23-28, 2011. This issue includes papers presented in the Advanced Ceramic Coatings for Structural, Environmental, and Functional Applications and Materials for Extreme Environments symposia on topics such as Coatings to Resist Wear, Erosion and Tribological Loadings; Environmental Barrier Coatings; Functionally Graded Coatings and Interfaces; Thermal Barrier Coatings; and Ultrahigh Temperature Ceramics and Nanolaminated Ternary Carbides and Nitrides (MAX Phases).
About the Author
Dr. Dongming Zhu is a senior materials research engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center. He is an internationally recognized leader in the area of turbine engine coating technology with over 15 years of professional experience. He has led the development of new environmental barrier coatings for future generations of turbine engines, and he has also led the development of advanced laboratory test techniques for evaluating performance of advanced turbine engine coatings. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Minnesota.
 
Hua-Tay Lin currently is a Distinguished Professor of Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology. He is Academician of World Academy of Ceramic, and Fellow of ASM International and the American Ceramic Society. His researches mainly focus on mechanical reliability of advanced ceramic components and electronic devices, high-temperature mechanical performance of ceramics and composites, and engineering design of microstructure and properties of ceramics and composites for clean energy and energy efficiency technologies, and coatings.
 
Yanchun Zhou holds a BSc in ceramics from Tsinghua University, and a M.S. in ceramics and Ph.D. in metals from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a visiting scientist at the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials, Russian Academy of Sciences, and a post doctoral associate at University of Missouri-Rolla in the 1990’s. He was Professor and Director of High-performance Ceramic Division, Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science before moving to Aerospace Research Institute of Materials and Processing Technology in 2010. He has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed international journals with citations of ca 11000 times and H-index of 55.
