More features in this new edition include: emphasized themes and relationships important for informed citizens, the "Great Ideas of Science"; increased emphasis on using visuals to help connect with the great ideas of science and learn key concepts; real-world connections: NEW Current events/"In the News" cases; tools to help understand the basics: In-text pedagogy and new "Stepped problems" to answer those "Big Questions" in science, new animations/online labs; and updated Discovery Labs.

New to Edition
  • Updated Key Words- Most science texts suffer from vocabulary that is too complex. Because the scientifically literate student must be familiar with many words and concepts that appear regularly in newspaper articles or other material for general readers, each chapter contains key words that appear in boldface type. These words are also listed at the end of each chapter.
  • Updated Questions - We feature four levels of end-of-chapter questions, and revise at least 30% of them in each new edition. Review Questions test important factual information covered in the text and are provided to emphasize key points.
  • Updated and Revised Discovery Labs New to the last edition and updated to this edition these “kitchen sink” labs provide students with additional real world science applications. The labs may be conducted in a class or lab or may be assigned to students to complete at home.
Features
  • Great Ideas and Great Ideas Concept Map-- Each chapter begins with a statement of a great unifying idea or theme in science and a concept map so that students immediately grasp the chief concept of the chapter and how the idea relates to the different branches of science. These statements are intended to provide a framework for placing everyday experiences into a broad context.
  • Science Through the Day--Each chapter begins with this section in which the authors tie the chapter's main theme to common experiences such as eating, driving a car, or sun tanning.
  • The Science of Life feature helps show the interdisciplinary nature of the concepts introduced by including sections on living things in most chapters.
  • The Ongoing Process of Science feature examines current areas of research and some of the most exciting questions currently being addressed by scientists.
  • Stop and Think! questions challenge students to think critically about the implications of a scientific discovery or principle.
  • Mathematical Equations and Worked Examples--Key equations and appropriate worked examples are provided in many chapters.
  • Science by the Numbers include many nontraditional calculations to help students understand the importance of simple mathematical calculations in the areas of magnitude. End of the chapter questions include Review Questions that test important factual information covered in the text.
