Description

Inspired by the Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, Second Edition, this volume focuses on the essential statistical tools for working with data from engineering, quality control, and the physical sciences

Statistics has a prominent role in the research and analysis process in the fields of engineering, industry, and the physical sciences. As a result, it is essential for professionals to have a complete understanding of statistical techniques that are employed across these areas of study as well as their accurate applications. Methods and Applications of Statistics in Engineering, Quality Control, and the Physical Sciences is a self-contained, one-of-a-kind resource that guides readers through the most effective quantitative techniques for gathering data across diverse areas, including operations research, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, and quality assurance.

Combining established literature with the latest research developments, this volume features classic articles from the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, Second Edition alongside updated contributions written by leading academics and practitioners. The result is a well-rounded compilation that unveils modern approaches to acquiring and analyzing data, reflecting the latest advances in areas such as chemometrics, change-point analysis, percolation theory, and accelerated life testing. In addition, new articles have been written specifically for this volume, exploring cutting-edge topics such as:

  • Directional statistics

  • Nonparametric quality control

  • Degradation models

  • Robust parameter design

  • Models for damage accumulation

  • Step-stress testing

Key statistical tools and concepts, are covered such as fundamentals of probability, discrete and continuous distributions, interval estimation, hypothesis testing, and simple and multiple linear regression. In addition, the book supplies insight on techniques related to survey methodology, computational statistics, and operations research.

Methods and Applications of Statistics in Engineering, Quality Control, and the Physical Sciences is an excellent reference for researchers, managers, consultants, and students in the fields of engineering, quality control, operations research, chemistry, physics, and the related client disciplines.
